Coffee’s on…

February 26, 2010 2 comments

Things have been crazy.  I’m definitely overdue to critique some stories from my online workshop.  It’s time.

Speaking of critiques, I read through the “first round” of submissions from my class/workshop at the U.  The stories were pleasantly surprising.  I’m not certain how much writing experience any of my peers there have, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. While we’re on the subject, my own submission is due there on Monday.  It should be close.  Close enough for review.

On a side note, I’ve been reading a new author.  Michael Sonbert.  Highly recommended to you.

Read on…..

I read things like Out of Touch by Brandon Tietz.  Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson.  Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski.

I read excerpts from The Never Enders by Michael Sonbert and reviews of The Contortionist’s Handbook by Craig Clevenger.  Both books are expected in my mailbox any day.

I’ve read everything published by Chuck Palahniuk (that I’ve been able to get my hands on).  I’ve read Amy Hemple and Robert Jordan.

Today, my thoughts are (to quote Palahniuk quoting Tom Spanbauer): “You will never write this well.”

But I will try.  I will write, and I will read.  I will study and learn.  I will write some more.

Some success …

It’s been awhile.

For one reason or another (or many), getting this story down in writing has been tough.  That being said, I am proud to say that I fianlly have a manuscript that I can work with.

This doesn’t mean that I’m done … not even close.  But I am to the point where I can tweak lines and add details.  Basically, I’m back to the fun part!

I am having a hard time working through this rough draft.  Long hours at work leave me dazed at night and hitting snooze in the morning while I should be trying to write.

Looking forward to this weekend when I can write, write, write.  I feel like this story will be pretty good and am excited to get the ball rolling.

Cliche terms are okay in blog posts, aren’t they?

Morning Creativity

I’ve been working long hours and am so burnt out by the time I get home at night that writing is almost impossible. Bummer, because it’s still all I think about.

So I’ve been getting up a little earlier and writing in the morning before I get ready for work. Granted, this isn’t Pulitzer-prize literature, but as far as getting my ROUGH draft into words, it seems to be working.

It also helps with the guilty feeling that I should be writing instead of (insert activity),
